Caring for the Caregivers: YWCA of Asheville Takes Bold Step Toward Childcare Equity
This new benefit is a direct response to what so many in our community already know: childcare is too often out of reach, even for the people providing it. Early childhood educators and caregivers are the backbone of our families, our economy, and our future. And yet, many still struggle to access consistent, affordable care for their own children.
“Providing tuition-free childcare for our staff is one way we’re living our values,” said Diana Sierra, CEO of the YWCA of Asheville. “We can’t say we believe in equity if the people doing the work can’t access the very resources we offer. This is about honoring our team and also calling attention to a system that doesn’t work—not just for us, but for Asheville, North Carolina, and the country.”
Women’s Equality Day, August 26, marks the 106th anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment prohibiting “states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex.” This amendment granted women the right to vote, but ratification did not necessarily ensure that all women had that right.
Fyffe Aschenbrenner has been leading fitness classes at the YWCA for 15 years, and we recently took the opportunity to learn a little more about her.
June is Pride Month, and we challenge you to learn more about the ongoing fight for equality.
