Until Justice Just Is: Community Events
Until Justice Just Is (UJJI) is an annual campaign of YWCA USA, designed to build community among those who work for racial justice and raise awareness about the impact of institutional and structural racism. This annual campaign provides the opportunity for communities across the United States to find an issue or cause that inspires them to unite their voices to educate, advocate, and promote racial justice.In addition to the Racial Justice Challenge (formerly known as the 21-Day Challenge), YWCA of Asheville will host events throughout the UJJI campaign. On April 13, there will be a virtual keynote, and we will host a watch party for Advancing Justice: Ensuring Equity for All. YWCA USA CEO Margaret Mitchell will sit down with an array of experts, community leaders, and elected officials to discuss the intersection between racism and housing disparities, how disability and mental health challenges relate to those disparities, and what we can do to address the most critical issues impacting communities of color today! RSVP Here to attend the in-person watch party at the YWCA (or register here to attend virtually).On April 19 at 12:00 p.m., our community partner, Pisgah Legal Services, will offer a Lunch & Learn on Immigration and Justice in WNC. Join Pisgah Legal’s immigration team to learn more about the Justice For All program, which helps eligible immigrants in WNC work legally and secure legal status and addresses other basic needs. The program will have a special focus on the Afghan Asylum Project. This event is free and open to the public. A light lunch will be provided thanks to generous supporters of Pisgah Legal Services’ immigration work.On April 27 at 3 p.m., join Mr. Roy Harris, storyteller and long-time Southside resident, to learn about the history of the Southside Neighborhood of Asheville. You'll also learn about current pressures in the neighborhood, and have an opportunity to collectively imagine the what the future might hold. Meet at the Pavilion in the Southside Community Garden at 133 Livingston Street.Then, to close out the Until Justice Just Is campaign, on Monday May 15 from 5:30-7:30pm, the YWCA of Asheville will be hosting a film screening of Beyond Walls: A compilation of 5 Films for Prison Industrial Complex Abolition. The screening will be followed by guided discussion and reflection. This screening is made possible in partnership with Working Films. Light refreshments will be provided.
