Swim Classes

Welcome to YWCA Aquatics Learn to Swim Program!

The YWCA values diversity in our members, and our Aquatics staff is no exception. Our Aquatics instructors have combined 30 years experience and come from a variety of backgrounds. Some of instructors are or have been teachers, artists, parents, Nurses, Navy Seals, and swim coaches. Our Aquatics instructors are nearly all Lifeguards, and within our department we have Lifeguards [LG], Water Safety Instructors [WSI], United States Water Fitness instructors [USWF] & USWF Instructor Trainers, a Registered Nurse and 2 Certified Pool Operators.

Our lessons are taught in a group format, with an emphasis on safety, technique, and building trust and confidence in the water. We pride ourselves on the quality and consistency of our lessons and believe that our foundation of respect, community and teamwork can be influential out of the pool as well.

We offer classes for swimmers as young as 6 months old and our adult classes have no age limit. All of our swim lessons are taught in group format, and are sold by the session. Sessions are usually a month long with each class offered once a week. Classes are available M-Th, as well as Sat [no Saturday classes in Summer]. Our solar heated pool is 86 degrees.

YW members $8 a class

Non Members $12 a class

You do not have to be a member of the YWCA to sign up for swim lessons, but you do have to be in the computer system, which was upgraded in 2014. If you have not registered with us since the fall of 2014, you will need to be added to our new computer system. Call the Aquatics department at 254-7206 ext 110 and Aquatics staff will enter you into the system.

YW members and returning students are able to use online registration through the portal found on our website. Follow the link and search for "Aquatics".

Things to Know About our Pool:
Building Information:
•Everyone who enters the YWCA must sign or scan in at the front desk.

•Women’s locker rooms are located on the ground floor, and Men’s locker rooms are located upstairs.

•Adults may accompany children 6 and under into locker rooms.

•The YWCA has 2 gender neutral changing rooms/bathrooms, each equipped with changing tables. One is upstairs near the Men’s locker room, the other is located on the pool deck.

Pool Area Information:

•Please be aware that there are no shoes allowed on deck. Shoe covers are available at each entryway.

•Our pool regulations are posted in the shallow end; please be sure that you and/or your swimmer knows and understands them.

•Everyone who enters the pool must shower thoroughly onsite before getting in. Showering beforehand minimizes our chemical costs and helps prevent skin irritation.

•Swim diapers are required for anyone not potty trained, and goggles are required for all swimmers ages 4 & up. Both of these items are sold at the front desk for families’ convenience.

•We ask that swimmers be on deck and ready 5 minutes before the start of class. Soft voices and still bodies on deck are also appreciated by our Aquatics staff and fellow swimmers alike.

During the Lesson:
•Anyone who wishes to watch lessons may do so from our pool viewing room. Located off the deep end, the pool viewing room has air conditioning, ample seating, and wifi.

•We ask that family and friends clear the pool deck during lessons.

•For security reasons, photography of any kind is prohibited during swim lessons.

•For safety reasons, each swim family is expected to have one adult in the building during lessons to be available for potty breaks, locker room escorts, and any emergency that may arise.

•Our Drop-In Child Care offers pay-by-the hour child care, which is available for swim families. The Drop-In center can be reached at 254-7206 ext 113. There is no charge for YWCA members to use the Drop-In.

Makeup Classes:
In order to maintain our instructor to student ratio, makeup classes are not offered for students who miss a swim class. The Aquatics department will issue credits to swimmers when lessons are cancelled by staff. Credits are to be applied to the price of a swimmer’s next session.

Thunder & Lightning Policy:
The YWCA follows the National Lightning Safety Institute guidelines regarding thunder and lightning. When either are present, the pool is cleared 20 minutes after each instance. Aquatics will issue credits for classes missed or interrupted due to thunder and lightning.
